2 Thessalonians – Apostasy Creeps Up On The Early Church

Thessalonians 1:3 We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing.

Well, Thessalonians 2 follows number 1. Anything new in this second continuation of epistle 1?

“Second Thessalonians was evidently written very soon after Paul’s first letter to that church” Click

2 Thessalonians 1: 4 Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.

2 Thessalonians was written just a short time after Paul wrote the first one. I guess he forgot something else to say, huh?

“In the absence of any very positive evidence on the subject, it has been generally supposed that the Second Epistle to the Thessalonians was written, like the First, from Corinth, and not after a very long interval of time.” Click

2 Thessalonians 1: 5 All this is evidence that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering.

Both epistles were written in the same place at almost the same time.

“The present letter, then, was written to instruct the Thessalonians concerning the day of Christ, “and our gathering together unto him” 1 Thessalonians 4:14-17 and the relation of the “day of Christ” to the “day of the Lord.” Click

2 Thessalonians 1: 6 God is just: He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you

There were some questions that rose up and everyone thought Jesus was coming back with certainty in their lifetimes.

“Hence some neglected their daily business and threw themselves on the charity of others, as if their sole duty was to wait for the coming of the Lord. This error, therefore, needed rectifying, and forms a leading topic of the second Epistle.” Click

These Thessalonians basically retired from their jobs and all earthly concerns because they thought the Christ was coming back in just a number of days.

“One error of doctrine, however, resulting in practical evil, had sprung up among them. The apostle’s description of Christ’s sudden second coming (1 Thessalonians 4:13 its being at any time, led them to believe it was actually at hand. Some professed to know by “the Spirit” (2 Thessalonians 2:2 others alleged that Paul had said so when with them.” Click

Yes, these Thessalonians were selling their homes, quitting their jobs and in general waiting down at the bus station for Jesus’ triumphal return.

“The principal object is to correct the erroneous belief that the day of the Lord’s coming was very close at hand. This belief had received the more currency because some reported that Paul had so declared, and had even so stated in a letter. Hence he now shows that certain great events must proceed that day, and that these events are yet future. He again enforces the teaching of the Lord that the time is unknown, and charges that all follow their usual employments.” Click

Paul unfortunately has to bust these folks bubble. Jesus was not coming back any time soon and before He does return a great apostasy has to blanket the Earth.

“The reasons for writing the letter are apparent. The conditions that called out the preceding letter still existed, and the information brought by the messenger who had carried the letter showed the need of further instruction.” Click

2 Thessalonians 1: 11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you, that our God may count you worthy of his calling, and that by his power he may fulfill every good purpose of yours and every act prompted by your faith.

Paul attempted to explain to these nuts that even according to Biblical prophecy the time just wasn’t correct for Christ’s eminent return to planet Earth.

“…come, there must first a great apostasy, and the Man of Sin must be revealed; and that the Lord’s sudden coming is no ground for neglecting daily business…” Click

2 Thessalonians 1: 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

In summary we do know for certain that Jesus is coming back and soon this time. Maybe even in our life time! Be Ready!
